We would like to inform you that the APPG for Involuntary Tranquiliser Addiction has now employed Michael Behan as a part time researcher to work for the group in the office of Jim Dobbin MP. Michael is an ex-tranquiliser addict who has researched and campaigned on tranquiliser issues for 20 years. He will be available to provide information on all aspects of this subject, including withdrawal from tranquilisers.
The APPG will shortly be holding an exhibition in Parliament sometime in the Summer. We have also been asked to give evidence to Dr Brian Iddon’s enquiry for the APPG on Drug Misuse. We have received a reply from the Rt Hon Kevin Barron MP Chair of the Health Select committee that the committee will look again at our request for an enquiry into involuntary tranquiliser addiction. We have submitted an Early Day Motion and have sent in a series of Parliamentary questions. We hope to use the information given to establish our strategy for the group’s activities over the next year.
We have asked The Rt Hon Dawn Primarolo to visit the Oldham Tranquiliser Project at the invitation of Barry Haslam who is working as pour regional co-ordinator in the Gtr Manchester area. He is collating information from the various PCT and hospital trusts on how they deal with tranquiliser addiction. This will provide us with the facts we need to understand their practice and suggest improvements. Our aim is to persuade the government to establish best practice throughout the UK.
We hope you find this encouraging. Please do not hesitate to contact us on this issue if you need any information or wish to put forward your suggestions.
